Has anyone here tried MSM for KP? I read the following post and was wondering if anyone here has tried this as a treatment.
sulphur Keratosis Pilaris
"Hey all, After reading the info on sulphur and sulphur defeciency (don't know exactly who posted it all) I did some digging on sulphur supplements. I found MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) at a vitamin/health food store. It comes in pill and powder form. I opted for the pill form. I got the 1000 mg. strength. I began taking 2 a day about a week ago and have seen DRAMATIC results! The actual keratin plugs have been reduced and the inflamation/redness has really improved. My KP has always been widespread and severe. I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch...(think it's working, when maybe it's just in one of it's remission cycles) but I really think there is something to the sulphur. Also my face has cleared up a lot too! Skin seems softer and healthier over all. God, hope this is it! Will keep it up and keep you all informed."
Here's a link for MSM http://www.msm.com/MSMFAQ.cfm #14 says: Q: How can MSM help my skin problems?
A: Because high levels of organic sulfur are found in the skin, hair, and nails, deficiencies of sulfur will obviously affect these areas. Many individuals taking MSM notice enhancement of the skin, hair, and nails as well as other functions of the body.
"Okay, I know I've posted a lot lately so I'll just reiterate once more then shut up. I'm telling you, try MSM! I cannot believe the wonders it has done not just for the KP, but for the overall appearance and condition of my skin. Not to be long winded, but here is my history of KP. Just in case there is anyone with the same history. I developed KP about age 14. I'm 27 now. I never new what it was back then. Just thought it was pimples or something stemming from puberty. In the beginning it was just on my upper arms, but soon spread to my forearms, back, butt, legs and face. I have always had a history of skin problems. When I was a toddler I would break out into viscous rashes accompanied by high fevers due to dermatitis. Also about the time the KP appeared, I had really bad dandruff. Not just flakes, but really thick build-up of dead skin on the scalp. That has dissapeared over time, but the KP remained. Once I found out what it was, I began searching for a cure. I can't even tell how many hours and how much money I spent on researching products that I thought would help. The KP has been a source of great sadness, anger and depression. It has affected my self-esteem, social confidence and romantic/intimate life. I was even at the point once of not only contemplating suicide, but devising a plan to best carry it out. After finding this site, I visited often, reading every post carefully, hoping someone would have an answer. Once the sulphur thing came up (to be taken internally, not just the sulphur soap) I did some research and found the MSM pills at a vitamin/health food store. Ther are not expensive (no more than any other vitamin or dietary supplement) I have been taking 2 1000 mg pills daily for a week and I cannot believe it. My KP is actually dissapearing before my eyes. The red inflamation has subsided, and the dots are fading quick. No, I do not work for any pharmaceutical company that sells this stuff or any of that jazz...I would encourage anyone who has not tried this to do so. I know all things affect different bodies differently, but I am exstatic!! Thanks for the site, everyone's input and suggestions. I never would have stumbled upon the sulphur thing without this site. There really is strength in numbers. May whatever God you believe in bless you all!!"
MSM Side Effects, Safety and Dosage. Reported side effects of taking MSM include softer skin, harder nails, and thicker hair. http://arthritis-msm-supplement.discount-vitamins-herbs.net/msm-safety.htm
You're welcome. How's the MSM going for you? I've been taking it now for a couple of weeks, and I've noticed a difference in my skin. Not as extraordinary as the post I quoted, but definitely a difference. I'm going to take it for a while longer and see how it goes. I am very hopeful!!
Still looking for other treatment options as well.
hi. i'm really new to KP. i work in a library and ran across the DERMAdoctor book. as i was flipping through the pages, i read a description of my arms and legs and so i continued to read. i was shocked to find that so many people suffer from this. being that i have always been somewhat "portly," i'd always believe the appearance of my skin was a side effect of being fat. "fat, piggy, skin" as my brothers called it.
i have had the same skin issues since i was a kid. my mother is from thailand and has beautifulskin! she doesn't even grow hair on her legs. i apparently didn't swim in her end of the gene pool. my father, i believe, has these same issues, but his doctor called it something completely different (folliculitis) and told him that the only "cure" in pill form was sure to distroy his liver. does anyone know the difference between kp and folliculitis. i've tried researching online and have compared pictures of the two. from what i can tell, i have the former rather than the later, and my father too. it seems that kp is chronic and folliculitis has flare-ups. there are no pustules and zitty heads to what we have. my legs are covered in little, non-itchy red spots. some places, like my tummy are hardly effected. by other places, like the backs of my arms and my legs are covered. in certain places, there aren't dime size areas, without a spot.
prior to beginning treatment with MSM, did you all consult a doctor? or, i guess what i'm really asking is, are your diagnosis of kp doctor given. i'd like to avoid any costly medical bill for a diagnosis that is already there. from what i can tell MSM is OTC and there seems to be few negative side effects. i am wondering is do i need to go to the doctor first? thanks for all the help.
In my experience going to a doctor for KP is a waste of money. I've been to 3 and they did nothing for me. I think MSM is probably pretty safe. I know body builders use it because it helps with tissue repair.
