I have had KP on my legs since I was about 6 years old and I am 16 now.
I have never used anything really to treat it, usually when I use lotion it just irritates my skin and makes it burn.
I don't know what to do about it! I work out and it's embarrassing to wear shorts because of it, I find it is even worse after the work out, and UGH! I am just fed up with it.
What is a good (not too expensive) treatment for sever KP on the legs?
Oh my... my girlfriend has KP, not me, but I'll tell her to give me the name/composition of his medicine... she has a good improvement since she is applying those products. I would like to tell you the name of the medicine, but I am in Mexico, so I don't think that you can find the same product.
She is taking: A special soap, Vitamin A, and the body lotion
I've been using Pond's skin lightening cream (can purchase at any Walgreen's for 5.99) on my legs for nearly a year--I generally combine it and a small bit of 1 % hydrocortizone cream. This combination, for me, has done wonders--and by that I mean has nearly completely diminished what I would consider a fairly bad case of kp that I had for nearly 15 years. I use it at least once a day--and no problems right out of the shower even after shaving. I've also found that for the legs, using a Sally Hansen's hair removal cream works best--it diminishes regrowth and really smooths out skin.
Treatments are very individual--but this is a low cost, low risk suggestion that might help. I only wish I had known about this when I was 16!
Using Bath and Body works eucalyptus spearmint lotion made my KP go away up to 97-98% gone (about 90% gone after 1 week of using it). When I was a teenager, Neutrogena's transparent bar soap eliminated my KP completely after 2 weeks.
I made a mistake when I named the skin lightening brand in my last post--I actually use Palmer's Skin Success--again less than $6. I was initially afraid of something called a lightening cream--but my skin has remained the same color--no dramatic effect, just a much softer, smoother, and I hesitate to say it . . . a more "normal" appearance. I'm now comfortable in shorts and skirts. Hope this helps.
If you have severe KP you should try "philosophy soul owner". It's actually an exfoliating foot cream, but it works great for KP too. I found out about it on the keratosis pilaris web site. There's also a list of other products for KP there www.helpforkp.com/keratosis_pilaris_treatment_index.html
Another thing to try is Jergens Natural Glow. It works really well at covering up the red dots on my legs and body. I love it!
