- Keratosis Pilaris Information -
Keratosis Pilaris (KP) - Characterized by the appearance of small rough bumps on the skin. Primarily, it appears on the back and outer sides of the
upper arms, but can also occur on thighs and buttocks or any body part except palms or soles..
Keratosis refers to a localized overgrowth of the upper layer of skin. Pilaris pertains to the hair. In keratosis pilaris, the buildup of
keratin (the hard protein in the skin, nails, and hair) is limited to the hair follicles.

I didn't know what it was, until I was 20. (And they "say" that you will grow out of it with age, yea right.) Now that I'm "30
something"... I've tried just about everything for it, and I have found that using Pure Olive Oil Soap from Kiss My Face works really well for it. I
also use St. Ives Medicated Apricot Scrub, which works really well for me too. It contains 2% Salicylic Acid, which is recommended for KP as well as Acne
proned skin types.
I follow up with either Carmol 20 or Lubriderm Advanced Therapy lotion. Both of which contain Urea, which is also highly recommended for KP and Dry skin types.
It seems to help control it somewhat, for me.
KP is the whole reason why I created my website! It's amazing how many people have KP and don't even know it. I didn't realize how common this skin
condition was, until doing all of my research on it!
Hi, I just found this board and I didnt know what KP was or that I had it until I read this thread! I am 27 and I have it on the back of my arms, I would say I have had it for 6 or 7 years. I dont do anything for it cause for the most part it doesnt bother me. It comes and goes and when it does appear, I feel it and know it is there but I just feel like it is not a big deal, it is on the back of my arms not like anyone really notices much besides me and it usually goes away for a while anyway so I have never made any attempts to take anything for it.
But I have noticed that over the past 9 months when I started drinking like 12 glasses of water everyday and taking a Vitamin E suppliment every morning, the KP on the back of my arms has decreased significantly, as well as the mild acne on my face dissapeared completley. So I think not only has this cleared up my face but it has almost completely cleared up the KP on my arms. I am feeling my arms right now and no bumps!
Anyway, thanks for informing me about what I had, I had no clue what it was! lol
I have had keratosis since i was about 4 or 5. (I am 22 now). I always just called it my "bumpy skin" and when i went to the dr. about it a long time ago, he didn't really have anything to recommend me. My husband has it as well, but mine is a lot worse. It covers my entire upper arms, and my lower jaw.
I am so happy I found some other people like me, and hopefully there are some good tips here that can make it go away.

Me too... I've just been so busy lately that I haven't had the time to work on getting even more people to the forum! The whole community is still fairly new, compared to other message board communities, but with the traffic that the community is getting thus far, hopefull we will have more members on the KP Board soon too!
I'm sure with winter approaching, there will be more, since KP gets worse in the winter! Believe it or not, viewing the stats from my website www.skincare4uonline.com the biggest keyword from the search engines to my site is Keratosis Pilaris!
I'm thinking that a lot of people do come on the KP forum, but mostly to read and not post... it would help if more KP sufferers posted, that way maybe we could all help each other!
Well, I'm getting ready to go to bed now, but hopefully I'll be able to get back on here again soon! I stay so busy, and I have so many updates that I'd like to make!! My sister comes in to town from MO tomorrow, and will be here for almost 2 weeks too!

Very good diagnosis. Water is #1. Everyone should drink a minimum of 1 1/2 quarts of water a day. Distilled water is best. I also add Suddenly Slender's Coral Calcium to the water. It cost about $1 a day but well worth it. Coral Calcium works great at controlling your PH level. It comes in little bags like a tea bag. You just drop it in your container of water for the day. This will also help you get more out of your vitamin/mineral daily intake. If your PH level is off, you body has a very hard time picking up the vitamin/minerals. In other words, you will not get the full benifits from your vitamin/mineral intake. Vitamin E is imperative to good healthy skin. Dr. Linus Pauling, a two time Nobel Prize winner said: "You can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency."
I also suggest taking RNA-DNA. Within a week of taking RNA-DNA, you will usually notice a difference in your facial tightness. Also if your skin is too dry, the moisture level increases. If it is too oily, the oil level declines and the moisture increases. Skin that drips oil is the body's attempt to correct lack of moisture. DNA is the body's blueprint and RNA is the carrier that brings the blueprint to the cells.
Your body is constantly rebuilding itself by replacing cells with new ones. Your DNA (blueprint) can be compared to a dress pattern. The more dresses you cut from the pattern, the more defects you will have with the pattern. The same holds true with the human body. Once you are grown, the body starts cutting back on RNA-DNA production. The body starts using more and more defective patterns which causes defective cells built which is a very big part of the aging process.
When you introduce fresh RNA-DNA into the body it begins to build genetically perfect cells. In other words you are building your body younger instead of older.
Keratosis pilaris can be controlled with alpha hydroxyacid gel but no known cures. This condition is a disorder of the skin that is hereditary, and commonly found in people with very dry skin and/or a vitamin A deficiency.
So many finding our if you have a vitamin A deficiency may help. I get it and lose it. Then it comes back once in awhile...
hi. i know i'm responding to an old post, but i'm new to this and kp, so please forgive me.
i have had kp since i was a child. like many, i didn't know what it was. my mother is from a different country and has beautiful, perfect olive skin. as a kid, she thought the bumps, (the thai words for zits are "sels") were because i didn't bathe well enough. and as a result, i was forever in the tub. from what i have read so far, over bathing with drying soaps is the worst thing to do.
i am interested in any information i can find right now. i am 30 this year and have just discovered that there is something i can do to help my "sel" issue.
i took genetics, so i know what the gene structures rna and dna are, but in your entry, i am lost. is it a product that i can buy OTC? if so, i'd like any information that you can give me please. thank you so much.
I have had this condition my whole life. I didn't wear t-shirts/tank tops until my late teens because I was so embarassed by it, because I pick & scratch them, trying to purge myself of the disgusting things (but there's always more to take their place). After I had my baby, it got REALLY bad, especially on my thighs and forearms, now I can't wear skirts. I'm covered in scars and my doctor kind of shrugs when I ask for help. I'm in my 30s and it's not getting better, but I care less what people think and wear tank tops anyways now. I'm glad there's a forum where I can finally divulge my dirty little secret.
Hi everyone! I've had keratosis pilaris since my early teens and didn't know what it was until this year. I am now 29 and still have KP, mostly on the backs of my arms, and then the red dots on my legs.
My daughter and husband both have KP. In addition to good nutrition, the products from www.skinbiology.com work really well. Check out the following:
Exfol Serum (2% salicyclic acid) -- definitely a favorite! CP Serum (copper peptides) -- for rebuilding skin cells Emu Oil (moisturizer) Squalane (moisturizer) Bioheal (copper peptide moisturizer for at-risk skin)
(great info on scar reduction as well)
Also, Grade A Unrefined Raw Shea Butter (check out www.aaasheabutter.com or, for a great value, Shea Terra Organics). Unrefined shea butter has great healing abilities. If you don't like the smell, try East African Shea Butter (Nilotica).
It's also really important to use gentle cleansers (my favorite soaps are from terressentials.com, or try Shea Butter Black Soap, Dr. Bronner's soaps, Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash).
Hi, I'm 27 years old and i have had Kp since i was about 10 years old. I have kp on upper legs and my lower extremeties and on back of my arms. This has really given me a low self esteem and i hardly ever wear shorts because it looks really bad. I just found this site and have found a lot of people have kp, but it does not seem as bad as mine. My kp has never gone away but i have never tried anything to make them better. I hate my legs due to kp, my bumps look so irritated when it's hot outside and when it's cold. I really haven't enjoyed my youth due to this problem. I never wore shorts or skirts when i was a teenager. I read there are some cremes out there such as eucerin plus intensive repair creme, does that really work? or at least make it better? I really glad i found this site. Replys are welcome. Carol77jahe13.
Hi everyone....I have been to several doctors and dermatologists and never has anyone put a label on this condition. All they would say is that it's dry skin, keep it moisturized and take shorter baths in luke warm water....
It's nice to know that I'm not alone, just wish there was more that could be done for this horrible condition. It has affected me my entire life and I would love to be able to just get rid of it. I am in my mid 30's and from what I've read, it's supposed to clear up before 20....Not in my case!!
Now that you know you have KP and you start trying all these great suggestions from the great people on this website I bet you will find some comfort and relief (alas no cure...yet). I just figured this KP thing out for myself yesterday. I already bout two different products for it today (Eucerin w/AHA at CVS, and KP Duty from Sephora).
I'm not new to the KP board, but I haven't logged on in quite a while and found it in this new place with a new look!
I've had kp since I can remember. My mom said she had it too, but I never remember it. Hers probably stopped sometime after she had me and started menopause (she had a hysterectomy after me due to complications). I'm now 24, and am still bothered by kp. Some days it really gets you down, others (like in the wake of hurricane katrina) you realize that much worse things can happen to you. Hopefully we'll find a cure someday so no one has to go through "oh, honey you're cold, let me get you a sweater!" (during the summer) or "oh, you got some sun today, didn't you! You're all red!" when you've been indoors all day. Yep, I know we've heard them all.
the rna-dna is this something you take orally i hope you do not think iam crazy but it sounded like something oyu would take orally if so wher can you buy this?
Hi, I am 37 yo and have noticed these bumps on the back of my arms about 8 years ago. I really never paid attention to it because they did not itch nor hurt. I thought they were really ugly to look at and to touch though, but my subconscious always said they will go away. I had them on my legs when I was in my early 20s and they dissappeared. Waiting did not do me any good this time and I am in the journey to find something to erase this ugly little heads now!!!
Hi. I am mom to one 14 year old who has KP. I must confess that though I have asked her pediatrician what this is "bumps" is what they told me. My daughter has not officially been diagnosed with KP by a physician. This was truly a Dr. Mom diagnosis (but I know I am right).
I was flipping through an old Shape magazine (getting ready to throw it away) and I noticed an ad for KP Duty and read the "chicken skin" description and immediately thought of my daughter.
I got on the computer right away and started researching KP and I know this is what she has. I am going to change some things in my daughter's daily cleansing/moisturizing regimen.
I plan on making an appointment for her to see a dermatologist, just to confirm, but I know that I am right. It takes months to get dermatolgy appts in my town (even if another doctor refers you). They really stay booked up. The changes I plan on making with my daughter are relatively minor, inexpensive changes. Changing to nonsoap body washes. Using a smoothing moisturizer twice a day (at least). I want her to try using natural products and avoid products with mineral oil and petroleum in it (I actually heard this was not good for the skin a few years ago).
I am so excited to find this forum for information.
