I was looking back through my Glamour magazines and happened to notice in the Oct. issue (on page 66) a brief mention of it.
Wipe out back-of-arm bumps 40% of adults have skin bumps
Whatever you do, don't loofah off those dry, bumpy patches. Your problem, called keratosis pilaris, happens when hair follicles become chronically clogged, says Ellen Gendler, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City: "Nobody knows why it happens, but we do know that scrubbing makes it worse." Try a nonabrasive exfoliant like glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid found in creams such as Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Body Cream ($8.50, at drugstores). With daily use, you'll be camisole-ready in two weeks.
I have KP too. I've always exfoliated too, but without great results. I'll have to try the Eucerin Body Cream mentioned in the article. I'd be grateful for anything that helps!
'Light' exfoliation is the best. Just get the top skin cells, don't dig down into the rash. Also, if you ever get your kp controlled enough, everyday exfoliation is supposed to help keep it from coming back.
I tried the Eucerin. First of all, it's expensive (one tube lasted me two days, but I have kp all over my body) Second, it's GREASEY. Third, it has mineral oil in it, which almost always makes things worse.
The Eucerine seemed to make my skin worse. (maybe it's supposed to get worse before it gets better...?)
Next I'm going to try the 'kiss my face' peach/alphahydroxy lotion that doesn't contain mineral oil or petrolium. You can get it at health food stores and it's around ten bucks.
That's weird....the only thing that seems to work for me is if exfoliate with a PUMICE STONE lol, it hurts like hell at first, but my skin is now used to it, and it helps to take away any bumps
A pumice stone didn't work at all for me. What I find works well is Philosophy Soul Owner foot scrub. I use it on my arms and legs and it works great. I read about it on this board and figured it was worth trying, and it is!
